Understanding broadband speeds on FARO plans

FARO broadband plans are designed to provide fast, reliable internet access. We do not slow down your connection based on usage.

However, the speed you see at any moment can depend on a few things, including your home setup, Wi-Fi performance, the device you are using, local fibre network demand, and the website, app, or service you are connecting to.

Does FARO slow down or throttle speeds?

No. FARO does not throttle your connection.

However, the fibre company that connects your home to the FARO network, such as Chorus, may manage traffic during periods of high demand. This can affect the speed available at busy times in some areas.

Why might I not see the full plan speed in one test or download?

Reaching the maximum speed of your plan in a single speed test, download, or session depends on the other end being able to send data that fast.

Many websites, apps, streaming services, cloud platforms, and speed test servers have their own limits. This means they may not allow one connection to use the full speed available on your broadband plan.

When can I use the full capacity of my plan?

You are more likely to use the full capacity of your plan when:

  • The destination service supports very high speeds
  • Multiple people are online at the same time
  • Several devices are streaming, gaming, downloading, or working online together
  • You are using a wired connection with equipment that supports high speeds
  • Your router, cables, and devices are capable of handling the speed of your plan

FARO has excellent single-session performance, but the highest plan speeds are often seen when either the destination supports those speeds or multiple users and devices are using the connection at the same time.

Wi-Fi and device limitations

Wi-Fi speeds are often lower than the speed of the fibre plan itself. This is normal. Wi-Fi performance can be affected by distance from the router, walls, interference, older devices, and the type of router being used.

For multi-gigabit plans, your router, network cables, and device network ports also need to support those speeds. Some laptops, phones, routers, and home networks cannot reach very high speeds even when the broadband connection itself is capable of it.

In summary

FARO does not slow down your connection, but your actual speed can depend on the fibre network, your home equipment, Wi-Fi conditions, your device, and the service you are connecting to.

For the best performance, use suitable high-speed equipment and test using a wired connection where possible.
